The Porsche Club Upper Canada Region held its first Driver Education this past weekend at the newly named Canadian Tire Motorsport Park, (formerly Mosp0rt International Raceway). Not only will we need to get used to the new name, we’ll need to get used to the new track. During the weekend and I’m sure, all this week, teams of workers have been and will be scrambling to get the facilities ready for the upcoming Victoria Day Speedfest Weekend presented by Castrol Edge.

There have been lots of improvements. In recent years the word ‘improvements’ has become synonymous with ‘changes’, but in this case. I really do mean improvements. First there is the tunnel under the track between turns 9 and 10. This tunnel is large enough to accommodate the largest of transporters – those vehicles used to haul whole race teams from one venue to another. There will be no more shutting down the track so these transporters can enter the track just before turn 8 and drive to the exit gate just before turn 10. Other changes include the two new pedestrian bridges – one at the top of turn 2 and the other at turn 7. In addition there has been some extensive landscaping giving the grounds a more open feeling. Other changes are in the works but these will no doubt be carried out of the months to come. At first glance it might appear that these changes are merely cosmetic, but I think the changes go deeper. For the first time in a long time, there seems to be a sense of purpose that these changes were not just implemented to bring the track up to par. They seem to be part of a plan which has a sense of purpose thus giving the aging facilities a new and invigorating lease on life. There are for sure, some exciting times ahead.
