Nissan cube – Day 6

Rear seats in normal position
People need stuff and we also need to move that stuff around with us. Hence passenger vehicles need a cargo area, a truck a place that isn’t designed as a seating area. The Nissan cube has a cargo area. It’s not large but it’s bigger than it looks. That’s because the floor of the cube’s cargo area is recessed. Not only does this add considerable space, there’s a lot that can go into this area without fear of it falling out when the rear door is opened.
While we’re on the topic of the rear door – this door open side ways. Whether this was deliberate or not, who knows, but this door opens away from the curb – safe and convenient. I wonder if the models destined for the Japanese domestic market where they drive on the left, open in the opposite direct? For that matter, I wonder if the rear window wrap-around style flips sides, so the driver can see through the side window incorporated into that wrap-around window. Without the facts – all speculation.
[Curiosity got the better of me and so I went to the Nissan Japan home web page and lo and behold, the wrap around window on the Nissan cube is indeed on the left and side of the vehicle and the rear door opens to the right - cool!!]
Since most vehicles with a rear door opt for a upward swinging hatch, why not offer the same on the Nissan cube? To be different? That’s part of it for sure, but the real real reason would have to be because the roof line isn’t high enough. The average adult would be forever ducking under the elevated door.

Rear seats moved forward
So more about the cargo space. For those times when more space is required, The rear seats can be slid forward about 8 inches to expand the cargo area considerably. Not only that, there is a 60/40 split rear seat bench that can be tilted forward to create even more room.
